Schaeffer Nutraceuticals’ health-boosting Viproactive® products are based on more than 20 years of protein signaling research that led to Professor Günter Blobel winning a Nobel Prize.
The German-born American citizen discovered that newly formed protein molecules have internal signals that guide them to the exact cells — and the exact locations within the cells — where they are needed to help with metabolism. This finding was a cell-biology milestone because there are thousands of types of cells, each containing different components. Dr. Blobel’s work showed how proteins find their way through the maze to the precise locations where they can help cells create energy.
The professor began this research in the early 1970s. Over the next two decades he learned more and more about the molecular mechanisms underlying the process. By the time he earned his Nobel Prize for Physiology in 1999, he had created a detailed picture of the phenomenon. One of his key findings was that all proteins are continuously being transported through membranes — or walls — that both separate a cell from its surroundings and separate the inner parts of a cell, the organelles.
At that point, Blobel realized that what he was seeing was universal across all forms of life — that proteins in yeast, plants and animals all behave the same way. For his pioneering research, Dr. Blobel received a Nobel Prize for Physiology in 1999.
Schaeffer Nutraceuticals uses the concepts underlying the research to deliver vitamins, minerals and other substances to the exact cell locations where they need to be metabolized. The result is Viproactive® users obtaining faster and more efficient use of the nutrients for maximum energy and better health.
Often scientists who discover important concepts about the way that living things work are satisfied with their basic research. That is, they are content not to take it to the next level — using it to help others.
At this point it’s up to other scientists to bridge the gap between basic research and the applied research that goes into creating beneficial products or services.
A German researcher, Dr. Harald Guse, recognized the potential benefit to mankind of Dr. Gunter Blobel’s Nobel Prize-winning discoveries on how proteins get to the right locations in cells to create energy.
He used the concepts underlying Dr. Blobel’s work to create a patented technology for delivering vitamins and minerals to cells quicker and more efficiently. He obtained the original patent in 2008.
Impressed with the technology’s potential to help people lead healthier and more productive lives, Schaeffer Nutraceuticals acquired the patent in 2016. It became the basis for Vitaprotein, the main ingredient in the Viproactive® line of diet supplements that the company produces.
