Professor Günter Blobel, a German-born American biology professor, discovers that newly formed protein molecules have internal signals that determine the exact locations where they will be delivered in cells to create energy. He discovers later that some signals are determined by amino acid sequences. His findings are a milestone in cell biology.
Dr. Blobel wins a Nobel Prize in Physiology for his protein-signal discoveries. In awarding the prize, the Nobel Committee said Dr. Blobel’s major breakthrough was discovering the mechanism by which newly formed proteins are directed to their proper location.
Dr. Blobel’s discovery had a significant impact on research in cellular biology and molecular science. German scientist, Dr. Harald Guse develops a technology allowing amino acids to be encoded in a way that transforms them into a biologically produced natural active protein carrier. This means the carrier can be used to deliver vitamins and minerals to the exact locations in cells where they are needed to create energy.
